About this practice

Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 12 minutes of self-compassion for perfectionism, on the morning of an interview. A guided session of about 12 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: perfectionism

Perfectionism treats a mistake as evidence rather than an incident. The bar rises precisely where self-worth is attached, which is why it never becomes achievable.

It tends to show up as:

  • Endless polishing before sharing
  • Fear of a wrong step
  • Delaying work until conditions are ideal

A practice with no grade attached is a useful counterweight. There is no wrong way to do the next few minutes.

Doing this before an interview

  • Do it where you will not be interrupted, even if that is a stairwell
  • Have the first sentence of your answer ready afterwards
  • Keep it short — there is no time for a long session

Nerves before an interview are normal and not something to eliminate. You need access to what you know, nothing more.

How self-compassion works

Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.

  • Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
  • Ask what you need, not what you deserve
  • A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Put a hand on your chest for a moment if that feels steadying. Or don't. Both are allowed.
  2. 0:16Put a hand where the feeling is strongest. Warmth and pressure are the oldest kind of reassurance.
  3. 0:31Let your sense of the room shrink down to just your body and the surface you're on.
  4. 0:46Nothing here is a test of concentration. Drifting off is part of it.
  5. 0:59Notice your breathing getting quieter on its own, without you deciding anything.
  6. 1:12Feel the pause at the top of the in-breath. It's shorter than you think.
  7. 1:26Notice your eyebrows. They're probably doing something small right now.
  8. 1:38Feel your knees. They're just hinges, but they've worked hard.
  9. 1:50Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
  10. 2:02Feel your ankles. Let them be loose.
  11. 2:12Give the bar that is always too high a shape, a colour, a temperature. Turning it into something specific makes it easier to hold.
  12. 2:31Nothing about the fear of a wrong step has to be explained or justified in this room.
  13. 2:46Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
  14. 2:59If you're thinking about the next thing on your list, that list will still be there.
  15. 3:14Say it once, plainly: this is hard, and I am allowed to find it hard.
  16. 3:28No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
  17. 3:39Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
  18. 3:51The question is not what you deserve. It is what you need, right now, in this moment.
  19. 4:06Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
  20. 4:16Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
  21. 4:29Notice the tone you are using on yourself. If it would wound a friend, it is not the truth.
  22. 4:45I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
  23. 4:57Notice how you're sitting. Adjust if you need to. Then settle again.
  24. 5:10Whatever you are about to say to yourself, imagine saying it to someone you love. Use those words.
  25. 5:26Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
  26. 5:38If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
  27. 5:50Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
  28. 6:05Nothing changes for a moment.
  29. 6:14Notice your ribs on both sides. Wide, not squeezed.
  30. 6:25Feel the slight stretch at the very bottom of the exhale.
  31. 6:37Stay with it.
  32. 6:45Let the whole of your right foot be heavy.
  33. 6:56Let your breathing find the rhythm it uses when you're almost asleep.
  34. 7:09A few seconds more.
  35. 7:18Let the whole of your left foot be heavy.
  36. 7:29Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
  37. 7:41No need to open your eyes yet.
  38. 7:51Notice your whole body as one shape, sitting or lying here.
  39. 8:03Each time your mind hands you the demand that everything be exactly right, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  40. 8:23A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
  41. 8:34This is not the last time the bar that is always too high will visit. That is not bad news. It means you will get more practice.
  42. 8:54Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
  43. 9:05You do not have to like the fear of a wrong step to breathe through it. Liking was never the requirement.
  44. 9:22Picture the demand that everything be exactly right as a weather front passing over. You are not the weather. You are the sky it moves through.
  45. 9:41Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  46. 9:55If you feel numb, that's a valid thing to feel. Nothing to fix.
  47. 10:08Notice if your attention is in the future. Bring it back to the room.
  48. 10:22Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  49. 10:34You are allowed to have a hard time without earning it first.
  50. 10:47Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
  51. 10:57When you stand up, do it slowly. There's no reason to hurry.
  52. 11:10Take one breath that's a little fuller than the others, and let it out through your mouth.
  53. 11:25Stay here a little longer.
