About this practice
When the afternoon slump shows up before an interview, this 7-minute body scan session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: the afternoon slump
The post-lunch dip is a normal circadian low, not a failure of willpower. Core temperature and alertness both dip in the early afternoon.
It tends to show up as:
- Heavy, foggy middle of the day
- Struggling to stay with anything
- Reaching for sugar or caffeine
The dip is temporary. A short practice gets you through the low without adding stimulants on top of it.
Doing this before an interview
- Do it where you will not be interrupted, even if that is a stairwell
- Have the first sentence of your answer ready afterwards
- Keep it short — there is no time for a long session
Nerves before an interview are normal and not something to eliminate. You need access to what you know, nothing more.
How body scan works
A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.
- Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
- Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
- Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Take a moment to notice the room behind you, without turning around.
- 0:13We will travel down through the body, one region at a time, and leave each one softer than we found it.
- 0:30Nothing here needs to be pleasant. Neutral is fine. Dull is fine.
- 0:43Let the last hour go on its own. You can pick it up again afterwards.
- 0:57Notice that you don't have to start a breath. It arrives by itself.
- 1:10Notice the small gap after each exhale. Rest there for half a second.
- 1:23Feel your palms. Warm or cool, either is fine.
- 1:34Feel the soles of your feet. All the weight of you goes through them.
- 1:48Notice your heels making contact with the floor or the bed.
- 2:00Let the exhale carry a little of the post-lunch fog with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
- 2:19Imagine softening the edges of the heavy middle of the day. Not erasing it, just letting the sharp parts go a degree softer.
- 2:37Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
- 2:49Let the quiet do its work.
- 2:59Let the exhale fall out rather than pushing it.
- 3:10If you're bored, stay with the boredom for a moment. It's usually thinner than it looks.
- 3:25No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
- 3:36Your only job is to notice what is there, region by region, without fixing anything.
- 3:50Notice the tone of your own inner voice. Is it kind?
- 4:02Breathe in for four, out for six, if you'd like something to count.
- 4:15I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
- 4:27There is no correct amount of the 3pm dip to be feeling right now. Whatever is here is the honest amount.
- 4:44If you catch yourself fighting the post-lunch fog, that is worth noticing. The fight usually costs more than the feeling.
- 5:01Let your ribs widen on the in-breath instead of your shoulders lifting.
- 5:14If you feel numb, that's a valid thing to feel. Nothing to fix.
- 5:27Notice any urge to check something. You can wait two more minutes.
- 5:40A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
- 5:51Start at the crown of the head and move down slowly. Do not skip to the parts that hurt.
- 6:07Let the last minute of quiet be the last minute of quiet.
- 6:20Notice your feet on the floor. That's where you start from.
- 6:32Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
