About this practice

For the times at 3am when stress takes up more room than you would like — 5 minutes, softening. A guided session of about 5 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: stress

Stress is a load that does not come off. Muscle tension accumulates in the shoulders, jaw and gut, and the body stops returning to baseline between demands.

It tends to show up as:

  • Shoulders sitting up near the ears
  • Short temper over small things
  • Waking already tired

Short practices work on the physical part of the load. They do not remove the demands, but they stop the body storing all of them.

Doing this at 3am

  • Do not check the time and do not turn on a light
  • Stay lying down if you can — sitting up makes it harder to return to sleep
  • Do not try to solve anything that arrives at this hour

Problems at 3am feel enormous because of chemistry, not because they are actually bigger. Defer them.

How softening works

Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.

  • Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
  • Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
  • If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Quick check: is anything genuinely urgent in this exact minute? Usually the answer is no.
  2. 0:14Unclenching is not the same as relaxing. Just stop adding the tension back.
  3. 0:27Nothing here needs to be pleasant. Neutral is fine. Dull is fine.
  4. 0:40Notice whether your breathing is high in your chest or low in your belly. Just notice. No fixing.
  5. 0:56Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
  6. 1:11Notice how many breaths you take in a minute. Don't change the number, just check.
  7. 1:25Feel your forearms, from the elbow down to the wrist.
  8. 1:37Notice your ribs on both sides. Wide, not squeezed.
  9. 1:48Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
  10. 2:00No need to open your eyes yet.
  11. 2:10With every out-breath, soften one place. Shoulders first, then jaw, then the space behind the eyes.
  12. 2:25If a song is stuck in your head, let it play in the background.
  13. 2:39Say to yourself: this is uncomfortable, and I can stay with it for one more breath. Then take that breath.
  14. 2:56This is not the last time the load you are carrying will visit. That is not bad news. It means you will get more practice.
  15. 3:15Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
  16. 3:30Let the exhale carry a little of the tension of too much on the plate with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
  17. 3:51You might be planning something. Notice the planning, then come back.
  18. 4:03No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
  19. 4:14If a place will not soften, leave it alone and go somewhere that will. It often follows.
  20. 4:29Let your shoulders come back up to their usual place, if they want to.
