About this practice
When self-doubt shows up after work, this 15-minute grounding session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 15 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: self-doubt
Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.
It tends to show up as:
- Questioning your ability before starting
- Assuming you are the least capable in the room
- Hesitating to state an opinion
Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.
Doing this after work
- Change something physical first — shoes off, coat off — so the transition registers
- Do it before picking up the evening tasks
- Aim to end it fully, not just stop
Without a marker, work follows you into the evening. The session is the marker.
How grounding works
Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.
- Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
- Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
- Return to solidity whenever attention drifts
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00If you're sitting, let the chair do the work of holding you upright.
- 0:13Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back. That contact is the whole anchor.
- 0:27We'll start broad and narrow down. Nothing sudden is coming.
- 0:39Everything that happens in the next few minutes is allowed to happen.
- 0:52Feel the slight stretch at the very bottom of the exhale.
- 1:04Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
- 1:17Feel the skin around your eyes. Let the muscles behind them go loose.
- 1:30Feel the outline of yourself, from the top of your head to your heels.
- 1:44Notice your ears, which mostly just receive things.
- 1:55Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
- 2:07Feel the middle of your back, the part that never gets attention.
- 2:20You have been carrying the question mark over your ability for a while. You can set it down for the length of this session and pick it up after.
- 2:41Let the exhale carry a little of the fear that you are not enough with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
- 3:01Let your belly rise first, then your chest, then the tops of your lungs.
- 3:15Say to yourself: this is uncomfortable, and I can stay with it for one more breath. Then take that breath.
- 3:32Think of the question mark over your ability as a guest that arrived without knocking. You can let it stand in the hallway.
- 3:50Notice your whole body as one shape, sitting or lying here.
- 4:02Take the next breath slowly.
- 4:11Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
- 4:24Start at the top of your head. Notice the scalp, which you almost never notice.
- 4:38Let your body keep settling.
- 4:47Breathe as if you had all evening. There's no rush in this part.
- 5:00Feel the soles of your feet. All the weight of you goes through them.
- 5:14Let this one be unhurried.
- 5:23Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
- 5:35Notice your pelvis resting on the surface below you.
- 5:46A few seconds more.
- 5:55Follow the breath down into your belly and feel it come back up.
- 6:08Let the whole of your left foot be heavy.
- 6:19Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
- 6:31If a song is stuck in your head, let it play in the background.
- 6:45No rush to move on.
- 6:54Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
- 7:09Notice if you've been frowning at your own thoughts.
- 7:20Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
- 7:30Feel your palms. Warm or cool, either is fine.
- 7:41Notice how many breaths you take in a minute. Don't change the number, just check.
- 7:55Keep following the air.
- 8:04If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
- 8:16A short silence. Let it be empty.
- 8:26Press down slightly and feel the push back. Your body already knows where it is.
- 8:40If you're judging your performance, that's the same habit as judging everything else.
- 8:53Let's pause. Just the breathing for a while.
- 9:04Name what you can see, hear and touch. Counting senses is not a distraction; it is the practice.
- 9:20Notice any urge to check something. You can wait two more minutes.
- 9:33Quiet now. The next part will wait for you.
- 9:44If your mind has gone somewhere else, the floor under you has not moved. Start from there.
- 9:59Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
- 10:11A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
- 10:22Come back to the solid things: weight, temperature, surface. They are always available.
- 10:35If your body wants to move, let it move, then come back.
- 10:48Let the breath be shallow if shallow is what your body wants.
- 11:01Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
- 11:13Nothing about the fear that you are not enough has to be explained or justified in this room.
- 11:29You are allowed to be unimpressed by the small voice saying you cannot. Indifference is a legitimate response.
- 11:45Notice the small pause before your body decides to breathe in again.
- 11:58Whatever the question mark over your ability is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
- 12:14If the fear that you are not enough starts telling you a story, let the story finish without you adding to it.
- 12:32Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
- 12:43Notice if you're waiting for something to happen. Nothing is scheduled.
- 12:55If you're counting the minutes, that's fine. Count them and come back.
- 13:08Notice the difference between a thought and the space around it.
- 13:20Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
- 13:31The floor is holding you right now. You do not have to hold yourself up.
- 13:45Let the pause stretch out.
- 13:54Take one more breath at your own pace, then let your attention come back to the room.
- 14:09Let the quiet end on its own rather than cutting it off.
