About this practice

When heartbreak shows up before sleep, this 3-minute grounding session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: heartbreak

A breakup activates the same attachment system as physical separation. That is why it hurts in the chest and why the missing comes in surges.

It tends to show up as:

  • Physical ache in the chest or throat
  • Checking for messages you do not want
  • Extreme tiredness in the first weeks

The surges pass. Having something steady to return to between them makes the first weeks less brutal.

Doing this before sleep

  • Dim the lights and put the phone out of reach
  • Do it in bed if that helps you stay there
  • Let yourself fall asleep rather than finishing it

Checking anything afterwards undoes most of it. Let this be the last thing.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Find one place in your body that already feels fine. Use that as the starting point.
  2. 0:15The floor is holding you right now. You do not have to hold yourself up.
  3. 0:29If your mind is loud, that's information, not failure.
  4. 0:40Feel the slight stretch at the very bottom of the exhale.
  5. 0:52Let the breath be shallow if shallow is what your body wants.
  6. 1:05Notice your jaw again. Let your back teeth part slightly.
  7. 1:17Feel the weight of the raw first weeks of a breakup somewhere specific, then let the floor take a share of it.
  8. 1:35You do not have to like the bruise where a relationship used to be to breathe through it. Liking was never the requirement.
  9. 1:53Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  10. 2:04Each time your mind hands you the missing of someone, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  11. 2:23Notice the difference between a thought and the space around it.
  12. 2:35Press down slightly and feel the push back. Your body already knows where it is.
  13. 2:49Before you move, notice one thing that's fine right now.
