About this practice

A 7-minute softening session for financial stress, when the news hits hard. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: financial stress

Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Lying awake doing arithmetic
  • A clenched stomach opening the bank app
  • Irritability about small spending

At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.

Doing this after bad news

  • Do not make any decisions during it
  • Let it be simple — you do not need to process anything today
  • Tell one person where you are, even briefly

The first hours after bad news are not for planning. Deliberately doing nothing useful is the right move.

How softening works

Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.

  • Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
  • Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
  • If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Check your hands. Are they doing anything? Let them stop.
  2. 0:12Let the exhale do the work. On each one, allow a little more give.
  3. 0:26Imagine your thoughts as traffic on a road you're standing beside. You don't have to flag any of it down.
  4. 0:43If it helps, imagine your attention is a torch beam. Right now it's wide and soft.
  5. 0:58Feel the pause at the top of the in-breath. It's shorter than you think.
  6. 1:12Follow one full breath from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
  7. 1:26Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
  8. 1:38Feel your hips. Wide, heavy, and doing nothing.
  9. 1:49Notice your heels making contact with the floor or the bed.
  10. 2:01the arithmetic that will not balance may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
  11. 2:19Imagine the worry that follows the bills as a room you can walk out of for a minute. The room will still be there.
  12. 2:38Notice your breathing, without changing it.
  13. 2:48Stay here a little longer.
  14. 2:57Let the breath be slow enough that you can hear it, just barely.
  15. 3:10Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
  16. 3:24Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
  17. 3:34Find the tightest place and simply breathe near it. Warmth does the softening, not effort.
  18. 3:48If your mind has wandered, that's not a mistake. Noticing is the practice.
  19. 4:01Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
  20. 4:13Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
  21. 4:25You do not have to like the fear about money in the night to breathe through it. Liking was never the requirement.
  22. 4:43You do not have to win against the arithmetic that will not balance. You only have to breathe until the next moment arrives.
  23. 5:01Notice where you feel the breath most clearly. Nose, chest, or belly — pick one and stay there.
  24. 5:17Notice how you're sitting. Adjust if you need to. Then settle again.
  25. 5:30If you're thinking about the next thing on your list, that list will still be there.
  26. 5:45Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  27. 5:57We are not forcing anything open. We are letting things unclench by a single degree.
  28. 6:11When you stand up, do it slowly. There's no reason to hurry.
  29. 6:24Start to notice the edges of your body again, and the surface you're on.
