About this practice
7 minutes to meet financial stress with less of a fight. A noting practice, on a plane. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: financial stress
Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Lying awake doing arithmetic
- A clenched stomach opening the bank app
- Irritability about small spending
At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.
Doing this on a plane
- Use headphones, and keep the seatbelt on
- Bring a layer — being cold works against settling
- Skip alcohol; it makes the alertness worse
Cabin noise is constant and will mask the audio more than you expect. Try the headphones before you settle in.
How noting works
Noting is a technique from insight practice: when something arises, you give it a single plain label — thinking, hearing, planning — and return to the anchor. The label creates a small distance between you and the content.
- Use one word, not a sentence — explaining means you have joined in
- Label and return; do not follow the thought to see where it goes
- Drop the labelling if it becomes effortful and just follow the breath
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Then find the nearest sound. It's probably your own breathing.
- 0:12Use one plain word, not a sentence. The moment you explain, you have joined in.
- 0:26Let the breath get a little quieter, as if you were trying not to wake someone sleeping nearby.
- 0:42Nothing here is a test of concentration. Drifting off is part of it.
- 0:55Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
- 1:06Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
- 1:20Let the whole of your right foot be heavy.
- 1:31Let your throat soften. There's nothing to swallow right now.
- 1:43Feel the tops of your thighs.
- 1:53You do not have to win against the fear about money in the night. You only have to breathe until the next moment arrives.
- 2:12Say to yourself: this is uncomfortable, and I can stay with it for one more breath. Then take that breath.
- 2:29Let the whole of your left foot be heavy.
- 2:40Keep following the air.
- 2:49Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
- 3:03Feel your calves, front and back.
- 3:13Notice whether you're breathing or holding. Start breathing again.
- 3:24Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
- 3:35A label is enough. You do not need to follow the thought to see where it goes.
- 3:50Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
- 4:03Feel the pause at the top of the in-breath. It's shorter than you think.
- 4:17Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
- 4:28Notice the space around the worry that follows the bills. It is there, even if it is small. Put your attention in that space.
- 4:47Whatever the fear about money in the night is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
- 5:03Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
- 5:17If you feel emotional, you don't have to explain it to anyone, including yourself.
- 5:31Notice the tone of your own inner voice. Is it kind?
- 5:43A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
- 5:54When something arrives, label it quietly — thinking, hearing, planning, worrying — then return to the breath.
- 6:09Let your eyes open when they're ready, not when the words end.
- 6:22Let your breathing be completely ordinary again.
- 6:32No rush to move on.
