About this practice

When exhaustion shows up on a rest day, this 12-minute self-compassion session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 12 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: exhaustion

Exhaustion is what is left after the reserves are gone. The body has stopped asking; it is now insisting.

It tends to show up as:

  • Feeling hollow and drained
  • Emotionally flat
  • Physical heaviness all day

This is not the state to push in. The whole point here is to ask nothing and let the body be heavy.

Doing this on a rest day

  • Do it without a reason or a target
  • Later in the day, unhurried, in good light
  • Let it be longer than usual if you want

Rest that has to be justified is not really rest. This one is allowed to be pointless.

How self-compassion works

Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.

  • Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
  • Ask what you need, not what you deserve
  • A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Take a moment to notice the room behind you, without turning around.
  2. 0:13You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
  3. 0:26We'll be quiet for a bit longer than usual. Stay with whatever shows up.
  4. 0:40Bring your attention to the parts of you that are already still.
  5. 0:53Feel the pause at the top of the in-breath. It's shorter than you think.
  6. 1:07Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
  7. 1:20Let your whole body be as heavy as it wants to be.
  8. 1:33Feel your hips. Wide, heavy, and doing nothing.
  9. 1:44Notice your hands again. Check whether they've loosened on their own.
  10. 1:56Feel your heart somewhere in there, doing its work without instructions.
  11. 2:08This is not the last time the body asking you to stop will visit. That is not bad news. It means you will get more practice.
  12. 2:27Imagine the drained feeling that rest has not touched as a room you can walk out of for a minute. The room will still be there.
  13. 2:46Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
  14. 3:01If you're irritated, that's allowed. Irritation is just weather.
  15. 3:12There's no need to try harder than this.
  16. 3:23I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
  17. 3:36If your mind is quiet, don't grab at it. Quiet comes and goes too.
  18. 3:50Let this be easy, if easy is available.
  19. 4:01Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
  20. 4:11If you're replaying a conversation, let it play. It'll finish on its own.
  21. 4:24We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
  22. 4:38I'll leave a gap here. Use it however you like.
  23. 4:50If you're bored, stay with the boredom for a moment. It's usually thinner than it looks.
  24. 5:05Nothing here needs to be efficient.
  25. 5:15I'll step back. You stay here.
  26. 5:25If you're judging your performance, that's the same habit as judging everything else.
  27. 5:38Notice your wrists. They bend a lot in a day.
  28. 5:50Let your belly rise first, then your chest, then the tops of your lungs.
  29. 6:04Let the pause stretch out.
  30. 6:13Notice your elbows. Odd things to have, but there they are.
  31. 6:25Let the breath get soft, the way it goes when someone is reading beside you.
  32. 6:39Let this one be unhurried.
  33. 6:48Feel the outline of yourself, from the top of your head to your heels.
  34. 7:02Notice your breathing getting quieter on its own, without you deciding anything.
  35. 7:15Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
  36. 7:25Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
  37. 7:37Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
  38. 7:52No need to open your eyes yet.
  39. 8:02Notice your eyebrows. They're probably doing something small right now.
  40. 8:14There is a part of you that has handled hard moments before. That part is here now, even if it is quiet.
  41. 8:32Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
  42. 8:44Each time your mind hands you the body asking you to stop, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  43. 9:04Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
  44. 9:16You do not have to win against the drained feeling that rest has not touched. You only have to breathe until the next moment arrives.
  45. 9:35Feel the weight of the hollow tiredness somewhere specific, then let the floor take a share of it.
  46. 9:51Follow one full breath from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
  47. 10:05Notice whether you're breathing or holding. Start breathing again.
  48. 10:16Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
  49. 10:30Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  50. 10:42If you only manage half of it, that's half more than nothing.
  51. 10:55Take the next breath slowly.
  52. 11:04Notice if anything has loosened. Even slightly counts.
  53. 11:15Stand up when you're ready. The list hasn't grown while you were here.
