About this practice

When self-doubt shows up in the queue, this 3-minute noting session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-doubt

Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.

It tends to show up as:

  • Questioning your ability before starting
  • Assuming you are the least capable in the room
  • Hesitating to state an opinion

Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.

Doing this in a waiting room

  • You can do this with your eyes open and your hands where they are
  • Nothing here needs to look like a meditation
  • Aim for steadiness rather than calm

Waiting feeds the dread it is meant to relieve. Having something specific to do with the time is the useful part.

How noting works

Noting is a technique from insight practice: when something arises, you give it a single plain label — thinking, hearing, planning — and return to the anchor. The label creates a small distance between you and the content.

  • Use one word, not a sentence — explaining means you have joined in
  • Label and return; do not follow the thought to see where it goes
  • Drop the labelling if it becomes effortful and just follow the breath

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Let your eyes soften. Not closed, just less busy.
  2. 0:11A label is enough. You do not need to follow the thought to see where it goes.
  3. 0:26Let your body be exactly as tired as it is.
  4. 0:38Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
  5. 0:51Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
  6. 1:04Notice your elbows. Odd things to have, but there they are.
  7. 1:16Imagine the question mark over your ability as a room you can walk out of for a minute. The room will still be there.
  8. 1:35Picture the fear that you are not enough as a weather front passing over. You are not the weather. You are the sky it moves through.
  9. 1:54Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  10. 2:05Feel the weight of the small voice saying you cannot somewhere specific, then let the floor take a share of it.
  11. 2:22If you're thinking about the next thing on your list, that list will still be there.
  12. 2:37You are the one noticing, not the thing being noticed. Stay on that side of the line.
  13. 2:52Let the pace of the last few minutes set the pace of the next few.
