About this practice
Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 3 minutes of softening for insomnia, at 3am. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: insomnia
Insomnia is often maintained by the fear of not sleeping. Anticipating a bad night raises arousal at bedtime, which produces the bad night.
It tends to show up as:
- Dreading bedtime
- Hours awake with a busy mind
- Sleeping worse as the week goes on
Removing the pressure to sleep is the active ingredient. This gives you something to do that is not trying.
Doing this at 3am
- Do not check the time and do not turn on a light
- Stay lying down if you can — sitting up makes it harder to return to sleep
- Do not try to solve anything that arrives at this hour
Problems at 3am feel enormous because of chemistry, not because they are actually bigger. Defer them.
How softening works
Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.
- Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
- Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
- If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00There is nothing to get right here. Nothing is being scored.
- 0:12Let the exhale do the work. On each one, allow a little more give.
- 0:26Let your sense of the room shrink down to just your body and the surface you're on.
- 0:41Notice the first breath of the day versus this one. They're the same mechanism.
- 0:55Follow the breath down into your belly and feel it come back up.
- 1:08Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
- 1:20If the frustration of not sleeping has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
- 1:38If the wide-awake mind at 2am shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
- 1:58Breathe in for four, out for six, if you'd like something to count.
- 2:11the counting of hours until morning may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
- 2:29Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
- 2:41With every out-breath, soften one place. Shoulders first, then jaw, then the space behind the eyes.
- 2:56Notice the quiet you made, and let it close gently.
