About this practice

For the times before work when financial stress takes up more room than you would like — 20 minutes, grounding. A guided session of about 20 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: financial stress

Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Lying awake doing arithmetic
  • A clenched stomach opening the bank app
  • Irritability about small spending

At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.

Doing this before a busy day

  • Do it before the first message or notification
  • Aim for steadiness rather than energy
  • Decide the first task afterwards, not during

The point is to begin without already being behind, not to prepare for every possibility.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Sit however you were already sitting. You don't have to straighten up first.
  2. 0:13Press down slightly and feel the push back. Your body already knows where it is.
  3. 0:27If it helps, imagine your attention is a torch beam. Right now it's wide and soft.
  4. 0:42Now let your attention move from the room into your body, slowly, the way you'd move through a doorway you know well.
  5. 1:00Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
  6. 1:13Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
  7. 1:26Feel your forearms, from the elbow down to the wrist.
  8. 1:38Notice your jaw again. Let your back teeth part slightly.
  9. 1:50Notice your ribs on both sides. Wide, not squeezed.
  10. 2:01Notice your ears, which mostly just receive things.
  11. 2:12Feel your upper arms hanging. They're heavier than you remember.
  12. 2:24the fear about money in the night may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
  13. 2:43When the arithmetic that will not balance arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
  14. 3:02Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
  15. 3:16Nothing about the worry that follows the bills has to be explained or justified in this room.
  16. 3:31You are allowed to be unimpressed by the fear about money in the night. Indifference is a legitimate response.
  17. 3:47Let the exhale fall out rather than pushing it.
  18. 3:58If a song is stuck in your head, let it play in the background.
  19. 4:12Name what you can see, hear and touch. Counting senses is not a distraction; it is the practice.
  20. 4:28Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  21. 4:40Notice if your attention is in the future. Bring it back to the room.
  22. 4:54Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back. That contact is the whole anchor.
  23. 5:08A short silence. Let it be empty.
  24. 5:18Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
  25. 5:32Come back to the solid things: weight, temperature, surface. They are always available.
  26. 5:45A few quiet breaths. That's all this is.
  27. 5:56If your body wants to move, let it move, then come back.
  28. 6:09If your mind has gone somewhere else, the floor under you has not moved. Start from there.
  29. 6:24No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
  30. 6:35Notice if you're being hard on yourself about any of this.
  31. 6:47Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
  32. 6:57Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  33. 7:11Feel the skin around your eyes. Let the muscles behind them go loose.
  34. 7:24Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
  35. 7:36Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
  36. 7:48Take the next breath slowly.
  37. 7:57Notice the difference between the breath at the front of your nose and the breath in your chest.
  38. 8:13Notice your breathing, without changing it.
  39. 8:23Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
  40. 8:35If you feel numb, that's a valid thing to feel. Nothing to fix.
  41. 8:48Let this one be unhurried.
  42. 8:57Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
  43. 9:08Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
  44. 9:21Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
  45. 9:31Notice your breathing getting quieter on its own, without you deciding anything.
  46. 9:44Stay here a little longer.
  47. 9:53If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
  48. 10:05Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
  49. 10:16Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
  50. 10:28Breathe in for four, out for six, if you'd like something to count.
  51. 10:41Let the quiet do its work.
  52. 10:51If you're distracted by a sound, let the sound be the object for a moment.
  53. 11:05I'll step back. You stay here.
  54. 11:15Notice your shoulders, one at a time. The left one first.
  55. 11:27Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
  56. 11:40Let the pause stretch out.
  57. 11:49If your mind has wandered, that's not a mistake. Noticing is the practice.
  58. 12:02I'll leave a gap here. Use it however you like.
  59. 12:14Notice your shins, which take small knocks all day and never complain.
  60. 12:27Let your breathing find the rhythm it uses when you're almost asleep.
  61. 12:40Remain here for a few more breaths.
  62. 12:50Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
  63. 13:02Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
  64. 13:17Stay with it.
  65. 13:25Feel your hips. Wide, heavy, and doing nothing.
  66. 13:36Feel the slight stretch at the very bottom of the exhale.
  67. 13:48Just the breath, still.
  68. 13:57Feel your calves, front and back.
  69. 14:07Let your belly rise first, then your chest, then the tops of your lungs.
  70. 14:21Let it be this simple.
  71. 14:30Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
  72. 14:42If the arithmetic that will not balance is loud right now, make your attention smaller. Just the next breath. Nothing beyond it.
  73. 15:00I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
  74. 15:13When the worry that follows the bills presses in, put a hand on your chest or your belly. Warmth and pressure are anchors your body already trusts.
  75. 15:33Let the breath be slow enough that you can hear it, just barely.
  76. 15:46There is no correct amount of the fear about money in the night to be feeling right now. Whatever is here is the honest amount.
  77. 16:05If you catch yourself fighting the arithmetic that will not balance, that is worth noticing. The fight usually costs more than the feeling.
  78. 16:23Breathe as if you had all evening. There's no rush in this part.
  79. 16:36If the worry that follows the bills shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
  80. 16:57Say to yourself: this is uncomfortable, and I can stay with it for one more breath. Then take that breath.
  81. 17:14Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  82. 17:25If you've lost track of where we were, you haven't lost anything important.
  83. 17:38If nothing much is happening, that's not a problem. Nothing much is often the point.
  84. 17:52Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
  85. 18:05Quiet now. The next part will wait for you.
  86. 18:16The floor is holding you right now. You do not have to hold yourself up.
  87. 18:30Let your body keep settling.
  88. 18:39Let the quiet end on its own rather than cutting it off.
  89. 18:52If you're going straight back to work, take ten seconds at the doorway first.
  90. 19:06No need to open your eyes yet.
