About this practice

Slow, spoken guidance for self-doubt. A softening session you can do after a conflict. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-doubt

Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.

It tends to show up as:

  • Questioning your ability before starting
  • Assuming you are the least capable in the room
  • Hesitating to state an opinion

Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.

Doing this after an argument

  • Do it before you re-engage or send anything
  • Let the physical arousal drop first — it takes minutes, not hours
  • Write down nothing you intend to send during it

Whatever you would write in the first ten minutes is rarely what you would say after thirty.

How softening works

Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.

  • Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
  • Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
  • If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Start with the noise that is already in the room. We are not going to try to remove it yet.
  2. 0:17Nothing here needs to be efficient.
  3. 0:27We'll be quiet for a bit longer than usual. Stay with whatever shows up.
  4. 0:41There's a difference between relaxing and stopping. We're aiming for the second one, gently.
  5. 0:55Let the breath be slow enough that you can hear it, just barely.
  6. 1:08Notice if your breathing is faster than you expected. Don't correct it. Just note it.
  7. 1:22Feel your upper back against whatever is behind it.
  8. 1:33Notice your wrists. They bend a lot in a day.
  9. 1:45Feel the skin around your eyes. Let the muscles behind them go loose.
  10. 1:58Picture the fear that you are not enough as a weather front passing over. You are not the weather. You are the sky it moves through.
  11. 2:17Notice the space around the small voice saying you cannot. It is there, even if it is small. Put your attention in that space.
  12. 2:36Feel your forearms, from the elbow down to the wrist.
  13. 2:48Keep following the air.
  14. 2:57Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  15. 3:11Feel the soles of your feet. All the weight of you goes through them.
  16. 3:25If your mind has wandered, that's not a mistake. Noticing is the practice.
  17. 3:38I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
  18. 3:51Let this be easy, if easy is available.
  19. 4:02If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
  20. 4:14Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
  21. 4:26Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
  22. 4:36Let the exhale carry a little of the question mark over your ability with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
  23. 4:56There is no correct amount of the fear that you are not enough to be feeling right now. Whatever is here is the honest amount.
  24. 5:15Breathe as if you had all evening. There's no rush in this part.
  25. 5:28Notice if you're waiting for something to happen. Nothing is scheduled.
  26. 5:40Notice the exact moment your attention left. You probably won't catch it. That's normal.
  27. 5:54A few quiet breaths. That's all this is.
  28. 6:05We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
  29. 6:15Take one breath that's a little fuller than the others, and let it out through your mouth.
  30. 6:30Come back at your own speed. The room will wait.
