About this practice

A 20-minute softening session for contentment, when it all piles up. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 20 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: contentment

Contentment is the absence of the next want, not the presence of everything. It lasts only as long as the wanting pauses.

It tends to show up as:

  • Arriving without enjoying the arrival
  • Immediately wanting the next thing
  • Rest feeling unearned

Not wanting more for a few minutes is a trainable state, and it is available without acquiring anything.

Doing this when you are overwhelmed

  • Do not decide priorities during it
  • Pick the shortest session available here
  • When you finish, write down the first physical action on paper

The pile looks less like a pile once the alarm stops ringing. Sort it after, not during.

How softening works

Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.

  • Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
  • Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
  • If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Begin with the simple fact that you got here. That already happened.
  2. 0:13Unclenching is not the same as relaxing. Just stop adding the tension back.
  3. 0:26Everything that happens in the next few minutes is allowed to happen.
  4. 0:39Imagine your thoughts as traffic on a road you're standing beside. You don't have to flag any of it down.
  5. 0:56Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
  6. 1:11Notice the small pause before your body decides to breathe in again.
  7. 1:24Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
  8. 1:36Feel your upper arms hanging. They're heavier than you remember.
  9. 1:48Let your whole body be as heavy as it wants to be.
  10. 2:01Notice your breathing, without changing it.
  11. 2:11Feel your calves, front and back.
  12. 2:21If the settled feeling after striving shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
  13. 2:41Nothing about the enough-ness of right now has to be explained or justified in this room.
  14. 2:56Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  15. 3:10Imagine the calm of not wanting more this minute as a room you can walk out of for a minute. The room will still be there.
  16. 3:29Picture the settled feeling after striving as a weather front passing over. You are not the weather. You are the sky it moves through.
  17. 3:48Follow one full breath from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
  18. 4:02If your body wants to move, let it move, then come back.
  19. 4:15Find the tightest place and simply breathe near it. Warmth does the softening, not effort.
  20. 4:29Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
  21. 4:41If you're sleepy, sit up a little. Or let the sleepiness be there.
  22. 4:54We are not forcing anything open. We are letting things unclench by a single degree.
  23. 5:08A few quiet breaths. That's all this is.
  24. 5:19If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
  25. 5:31If a place will not soften, leave it alone and go somewhere that will. It often follows.
  26. 5:46Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
  27. 5:58Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
  28. 6:12With every out-breath, soften one place. Shoulders first, then jaw, then the space behind the eyes.
  29. 6:27I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
  30. 6:40You might be planning something. Notice the planning, then come back.
  31. 6:52Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
  32. 7:02Notice your breathing getting quieter on its own, without you deciding anything.
  33. 7:15Feel the middle of your back, the part that never gets attention.
  34. 7:28Let's pause. Just the breathing for a while.
  35. 7:39If you're replaying a conversation, let it play. It'll finish on its own.
  36. 7:52Take the next breath slowly.
  37. 8:01Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
  38. 8:13Feel the tops of your thighs.
  39. 8:23No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
  40. 8:34If you feel emotional, you don't have to explain it to anyone, including yourself.
  41. 8:48Let the pause stretch out.
  42. 8:57Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
  43. 9:10Feel the outline of yourself, from the top of your head to your heels.
  44. 9:24I'll step back. You stay here.
  45. 9:34Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
  46. 9:47Let the quiet do its work.
  47. 9:57If you've lost track of where we were, you haven't lost anything important.
  48. 10:10Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
  49. 10:21Notice your ribs on both sides. Wide, not squeezed.
  50. 10:32Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
  51. 10:45Remain here for a few more breaths.
  52. 10:55Notice how quickly your mind labels things: good, bad, boring, nice.
  53. 11:07A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
  54. 11:18Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
  55. 11:30Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
  56. 11:44Just the breath, still.
  57. 11:53Notice if you're being hard on yourself about any of this.
  58. 12:05Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
  59. 12:16Notice your wrists. They bend a lot in a day.
  60. 12:28Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
  61. 12:39No need to open your eyes yet.
  62. 12:49Notice where your body is still holding something. Leave it alone.
  63. 13:01Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  64. 13:12Stay with it.
  65. 13:20Feel your knees. They're just hinges, but they've worked hard.
  66. 13:32Notice how many breaths you take in a minute. Don't change the number, just check.
  67. 13:46No rush to move on.
  68. 13:55Feel the parts of you that have gone quiet.
  69. 14:06Notice the difference between the breath at the front of your nose and the breath in your chest.
  70. 14:22Stay here a little longer.
  71. 14:31Now feel both feet at once. That's a lot of contact with the world.
  72. 14:45Give the enough-ness of right now a shape, a colour, a temperature. Turning it into something specific makes it easier to hold.
  73. 15:03Quiet now. The next part will wait for you.
  74. 15:14Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the calm of not wanting more this minute is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
  75. 15:34Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
  76. 15:46Notice the space around the settled feeling after striving. It is there, even if it is small. Put your attention in that space.
  77. 16:04You have been carrying the enough-ness of right now for a while. You can set it down for the length of this session and pick it up after.
  78. 16:24Let the exhale fall out rather than pushing it.
  79. 16:35You do not have to solve the calm of not wanting more this minute in these few minutes. Your only job is to keep breathing while it is here.
  80. 16:56Notice how the settled feeling after striving changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
  81. 17:13Let your belly rise first, then your chest, then the tops of your lungs.
  82. 17:27Notice the tone of your own inner voice. Is it kind?
  83. 17:39If you're thinking about the next thing on your list, that list will still be there.
  84. 17:54If your mind has wandered, that's not a mistake. Noticing is the practice.
  85. 18:07Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
  86. 18:19Let the exhale do the work. On each one, allow a little more give.
  87. 18:33Let your body keep settling.
  88. 18:42Let your eyes open when they're ready, not when the words end.
  89. 18:55Take your time opening your eyes. Nothing is waiting urgently.
  90. 19:07Keep following the air.
