About this practice
When financial stress shows up before a conversation you are dreading, this 20-minute gratitude session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 20 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: financial stress
Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Lying awake doing arithmetic
- A clenched stomach opening the bank app
- Irritability about small spending
At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.
Doing this before a hard conversation
- Do it before, not during, and again after if it went badly
- Decide your one non-negotiable sentence beforehand
- Plan to let the other person speak first
Being settled makes it easier to listen rather than to defend. That is usually what the conversation needs.
How gratitude works
Gratitude here is an attention practice, not a demand for a positive mood. Attention defaults to threats because they are urgent, so pleasant and ordinary things get skipped simply for being safe.
- Pick one ordinary thing rather than something impressive
- Stay with it for two breaths — depth beats length of list
- Do not aim at feeling grateful; aim at noticing
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Unclench your jaw. You were probably holding it without noticing.
- 0:12If nothing comes, notice that something did not go wrong. That also counts.
- 0:25Notice whether your breathing is high in your chest or low in your belly. Just notice. No fixing.
- 0:41There's no correct speed. Slower isn't better. Steadier is the only aim.
- 0:54Let your breathing be boring. Boring is good here.
- 1:05Follow one full breath from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
- 1:19Notice the small movement in your belly when you breathe.
- 1:31Feel the outline of yourself, from the top of your head to your heels.
- 1:45Feel the tops of your thighs.
- 1:55Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
- 2:08Notice your fingers, one by one, starting with the little finger.
- 2:20Feel the weight of the arithmetic that will not balance somewhere specific, then let the floor take a share of it.
- 2:37When the worry that follows the bills arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
- 2:56Notice the difference between the breath at the front of your nose and the breath in your chest.
- 3:12Let the fear about money in the night be exactly as big as it is, and let your breath be exactly as slow as it is. They can coexist.
- 3:33Let the exhale carry a little of the arithmetic that will not balance with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
- 3:53Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
- 4:08If your body wants to move, let it move, then come back.
- 4:21There is no need to feel grateful. Just look, and see what is actually there.
- 4:35Quiet now. The next part will wait for you.
- 4:46If you're counting the minutes, that's fine. Count them and come back.
- 4:59Let it be unimpressive. Small good things are the most reliable ones.
- 5:12I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
- 5:25If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
- 5:37Pick one ordinary thing from today — a warm drink, a dry walk, a message — and let it count.
- 5:54Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
- 6:06Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
- 6:18We are not forcing positivity. We are just noticing what went right, however small.
- 6:32Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
- 6:42If you've lost track of where we were, you haven't lost anything important.
- 6:55Stay with it.
- 7:03Let your belly rise first, then your chest, then the tops of your lungs.
- 7:17Feel your knees. They're just hinges, but they've worked hard.
- 7:29A few quiet breaths. That's all this is.
- 7:40Notice any tension that arrived while you weren't looking.
- 7:51Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
- 8:01Breathe as if you had all evening. There's no rush in this part.
- 8:14Notice the backs of your knees, which you feel more than you think.
- 8:27Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
- 8:39Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
- 8:52Just the breath, still.
- 9:01Follow the breath down into your belly and feel it come back up.
- 9:14Notice your heels making contact with the floor or the bed.
- 9:26Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
- 9:38Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
- 9:49Take the next breath slowly.
- 9:58Notice the difference between a thought and the space around it.
- 10:10Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
- 10:21Notice your pelvis resting on the surface below you.
- 10:32Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
- 10:44No need to open your eyes yet.
- 10:54If a worry shows up, name it quietly and let it sit beside you.
- 11:08Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
- 11:20Feel your face. It's probably softer than it was five minutes ago.
- 11:33Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
- 11:47Let the pause stretch out.
- 11:56Notice whether you're breathing or holding. Start breathing again.
- 12:07A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
- 12:18Move to your forehead. Let it be smooth instead of gathered.
- 12:30Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
- 12:44A few seconds more.
- 12:53Feel your upper arms hanging. They're heavier than you remember.
- 13:05Notice your breathing getting quieter on its own, without you deciding anything.
- 13:18Stay here a little longer.
- 13:27Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
- 13:39Notice where you feel the breath most clearly. Nose, chest, or belly — pick one and stay there.
- 13:55Let this one be unhurried.
- 14:04Notice your eyebrows. They're probably doing something small right now.
- 14:16Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
- 14:31No rush to move on.
- 14:40Notice your whole body as one shape, sitting or lying here.
- 14:52You have been carrying the worry that follows the bills for a while. You can set it down for the length of this session and pick it up after.
- 15:13A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
- 15:24Whatever the fear about money in the night is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
- 15:40Let your ribs widen on the in-breath instead of your shoulders lifting.
- 15:53If the arithmetic that will not balance starts telling you a story, let the story finish without you adding to it.
- 16:10Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the worry that follows the bills is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
- 16:29Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
- 16:42Notice the space around the fear about money in the night. It is there, even if it is small. Put your attention in that space.
- 17:01You do not have to win against the arithmetic that will not balance. You only have to breathe until the next moment arrives.
- 17:19Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
- 17:32Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
- 17:46You might be planning something. Notice the planning, then come back.
- 17:58If you feel numb, that's a valid thing to feel. Nothing to fix.
- 18:11I'll step back. You stay here.
- 18:21Stay with it for two breaths. Gratitude deepens by staying, not by listing.
- 18:34Let the quiet do its work.
- 18:44Let the last minute of quiet be the last minute of quiet.
- 18:57Before you move, notice one thing that's fine right now.
- 19:09Keep following the air.
