About this practice

Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 15 minutes of breathing for financial stress, in the middle of the night. A guided session of about 15 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: financial stress

Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Lying awake doing arithmetic
  • A clenched stomach opening the bank app
  • Irritability about small spending

At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.

Doing this at 3am

  • Do not check the time and do not turn on a light
  • Stay lying down if you can — sitting up makes it harder to return to sleep
  • Do not try to solve anything that arrives at this hour

Problems at 3am feel enormous because of chemistry, not because they are actually bigger. Defer them.

How breathing works

A breathing practice uses the breath as the object of attention and as the control lever. Because exhaling slows the heart through the vagus nerve, it acts on the nervous system directly rather than through thinking.

  • Keep the exhale longer than the inhale — that is the active ingredient
  • Count the exhales and start again whenever you lose count
  • Do not force depth; let the breath find its own level

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Keep your eyes open if you like, resting on one point of the floor a metre or two ahead.
  2. 0:16We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
  3. 0:26Notice whether your breathing is high in your chest or low in your belly. Just notice. No fixing.
  4. 0:42We're going to let the body lead and the mind follow for a while.
  5. 0:56Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
  6. 1:10Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
  7. 1:23Notice your ribs on both sides. Wide, not squeezed.
  8. 1:34Feel your knees. They're just hinges, but they've worked hard.
  9. 1:46Notice your pelvis resting on the surface below you.
  10. 1:57Now the right shoulder. Let it be a centimetre lower than it was.
  11. 2:10Feel your ankles. Let them be loose.
  12. 2:20Notice how the arithmetic that will not balance changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
  13. 2:37You do not have to win against the worry that follows the bills. You only have to breathe until the next moment arrives.
  14. 2:55Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
  15. 3:06This is not the last time the fear about money in the night will visit. That is not bad news. It means you will get more practice.
  16. 3:26Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the arithmetic that will not balance is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
  17. 3:45Notice your eyebrows. They're probably doing something small right now.
  18. 3:57Let the quiet do its work.
  19. 4:07Follow the breath down into your belly and feel it come back up.
  20. 4:20Notice your wrists. They bend a lot in a day.
  21. 4:32Let the pause stretch out.
  22. 4:41Let your belly rise first, then your chest, then the tops of your lungs.
  23. 4:55Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
  24. 5:07Nothing changes for a moment.
  25. 5:16Notice the small gap after each exhale. Rest there for half a second.
  26. 5:29Notice your elbows. Odd things to have, but there they are.
  27. 5:41Keep following the air.
  28. 5:50Let the breath be shallow if shallow is what your body wants.
  29. 6:03Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
  30. 6:15No need to open your eyes yet.
  31. 6:25Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
  32. 6:38Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
  33. 6:51Just the breath, still.
  34. 7:00A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
  35. 7:11We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
  36. 7:25If you're replaying a conversation, let it play. It'll finish on its own.
  37. 7:38I'll leave a gap here. Use it however you like.
  38. 7:50There's no need to try harder than this.
  39. 8:01If a worry shows up, name it quietly and let it sit beside you.
  40. 8:15Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
  41. 8:27Nothing here needs to be efficient.
  42. 8:37Notice if you're being hard on yourself about any of this.
  43. 8:49A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
  44. 9:00Small efforts are the whole method.
  45. 9:10Notice the difference between a thought and the space around it.
  46. 9:22Quiet now. The next part will wait for you.
  47. 9:33You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
  48. 9:46Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
  49. 9:58I'll step back. You stay here.
  50. 10:08If you only manage half of it, that's half more than nothing.
  51. 10:21If you're irritated, that's allowed. Irritation is just weather.
  52. 10:32Notice if your breathing is faster than you expected. Don't correct it. Just note it.
  53. 10:46Let's pause. Just the breathing for a while.
  54. 10:57Each time your mind hands you the worry that follows the bills, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  55. 11:17You have been carrying the fear about money in the night for a while. You can set it down for the length of this session and pick it up after.
  56. 11:38Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
  57. 11:53Let the exhale carry a little of the arithmetic that will not balance with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
  58. 12:13There is a part of you that has handled hard moments before. That part is here now, even if it is quiet.
  59. 12:31Feel the slight stretch at the very bottom of the exhale.
  60. 12:43If you're judging your performance, that's the same habit as judging everything else.
  61. 12:56Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
  62. 13:09If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
  63. 13:21Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
  64. 13:33Let this be easy, if easy is available.
  65. 13:44Remain here for a few more breaths.
  66. 13:54Stand up when you're ready. The list hasn't grown while you were here.
  67. 14:07Let the quiet end on its own rather than cutting it off.
  68. 14:20Take the next breath slowly.
