Focus session for writing: 25 minutes, a fan or air conditioner, when you have been meaning to start
25 minutes of writing, with a fan or air conditioner and a note on what to do when you drift.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
If you're tired, you can let that be true. Tired is allowed here. You have been meaning to start. This is the least intimidating way in. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.
1 Before you start
- Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
2 While the timer runs
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
3 When it ends
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
4What to put on
a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
