Focus session for thesis writing: 50 minutes, birds at dawn, when the weather has kept you inside
50 minutes of thesis writing, with birds at dawn and a note on what to do when you drift.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Begin with the simple fact that you got here. That already happened. Bad weather is a decent excuse to stay in and do this. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.
1 Before you start
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
- Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
2 While the timer runs
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
- If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
3 When it ends
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
4What to put on
birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
