50-minute focus block for thesis writing — café murmur, if you are tired of apps
A timer, a short prep list, and 50 minutes to add to the pile.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Put both feet flat on the floor and let them take some of the weight. No account, no streak, no notification asking how you feel. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.
1 Before you start
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
- Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
2 While the timer runs
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
3 When it ends
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
4What to put on
café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
