Focus session for research: 50 minutes, plain quiet, if you have five quiet minutes
50 minutes of research, with plain quiet and a note on what to do when you drift.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
If you're sitting, let the chair do the work of holding you upright. Five quiet minutes is enough. Ten is generous. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
- Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
2 While the timer runs
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
3 When it ends
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
4What to put on
plain quiet — No added sound at all. If you have a quiet room, that is usually better than any recording of one.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
