Deep work timer: 45 minutes of research (birds at dawn), before you go back to something hard
One block of research with birds at dawn underneath. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Notice where your body touches the chair. That contact is doing more for you than it looks. Five minutes here is cheaper than an hour of grinding. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
- Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
2 While the timer runs
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
- If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
3 When it ends
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
4What to put on
birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
