Focus session for reading: 45 minutes, distant traffic, after a long day

45 minutes of reading, with distant traffic and a note on what to do when you drift.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Let your shoulders drop about a centimetre. That is roughly where most of us keep the day. Use it at the end of a long day, not at the start of one. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.

1 Before you start

  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
  • Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".

2 While the timer runs

  • When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.

3 When it ends

  • Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
  • Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
  • Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.

4What to put on

distant traffic — A low continuous wash from a road you are not on. Familiar and easy to stop hearing.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
