Focus session for reading: 25 minutes, distant traffic, if you are fitting this around other people

25 minutes of reading, with distant traffic and a note on what to do when you drift.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Rest your hands somewhere they don't have to do anything. It is designed to fit around other people’s schedules. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.

1 Before you start

  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
  • Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
  • Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.

2 While the timer runs

  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
  • If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.

3 When it ends

  • Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.

4What to put on

distant traffic — A low continuous wash from a road you are not on. Familiar and easy to stop hearing.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
