Focus session for planning: 90 minutes, rain on a window, when you are waiting for something

90 minutes of planning, with rain on a window and a note on what to do when you drift.

90:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. Waiting is dead time you can spend on this instead. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.

1 Before you start

  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
  • Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
  • Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
  • Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
  • If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
  • If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.

3 When it ends

  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
  • If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
  • Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.

4What to put on

rain on a window — Steady rain is broadband noise with a slow natural rhythm. It masks speech and keyboard clatter without being interesting enough to listen to.
