Deep work timer: 50 minutes of studying (café murmur), if you are new to this
One block of studying with café murmur underneath. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Notice whether you're leaning forward. Most people are, slightly, all day. Nothing here assumes you have done this before. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.
1 Before you start
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
- Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
- Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
- Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
2 While the timer runs
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
3 When it ends
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
4What to put on
café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
