25-minute focus block for studying — forest at dusk, when your attention is scattered

A timer, a short prep list, and 25 minutes to take in the material.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Let your forehead smooth out. Most of us hold a small frown there all day. Scattered attention is the raw material, not an obstacle. No preamble. We start with the body.

1 Before you start

  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
  • If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
  • Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
  • If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.

2 While the timer runs

  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.

3 When it ends

  • Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
  • Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.

4What to put on

forest at dusk — Birds settling, leaves moving, nothing sudden. It works because it sounds like a place you can safely ignore.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
