Deep work timer: 50 minutes of editing (forest at dusk), after a difficult conversation
One block of editing with forest at dusk underneath. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Put both feet flat on the floor and let them take some of the weight. Difficult conversations leave a residue. This is for the residue. No preamble. We start with the body.
1 Before you start
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
- Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
- Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
2 While the timer runs
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
3 When it ends
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
4What to put on
forest at dusk — Birds settling, leaves moving, nothing sudden. It works because it sounds like a place you can safely ignore.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
