Deep work timer: 50 minutes of data work (white noise), when you cannot concentrate on anything else

One block of data work with white noise underneath. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Let your next exhale be a sigh, if a sigh is what's waiting there. When concentration is gone, work with what is left. Straight through, at a normal pace.

1 Before you start

  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
  • If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
  • Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.

2 While the timer runs

  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
  • If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.

3 When it ends

  • If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
  • Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
  • Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.

4What to put on

white noise — Flat across all frequencies and very effective at covering speech. Some people find it harsh after an hour; keep the volume low.
