Deep work timer: 50 minutes of data work (vinyl crackle), if you have five quiet minutes

One block of data work with vinyl crackle underneath. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. Five quiet minutes is enough. Ten is generous. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.

1 Before you start

  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
  • Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
  • Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.

3 When it ends

  • If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.

4What to put on

vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.
