Focus session for data work: 25 minutes, brown noise, if you have five quiet minutes
25 minutes of data work, with brown noise and a note on what to do when you drift.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Put both feet flat on the floor and let them take some of the weight. Five quiet minutes is enough. Ten is generous. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.
1 Before you start
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
2 While the timer runs
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
3 When it ends
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
4What to put on
brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.
