Deep work timer: 50 minutes of brainstorming (a fan or air conditioner), if you are doing this instead of scrolling

One block of brainstorming with a fan or air conditioner underneath. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Feel your ribs move. That is all the machinery you need to pay attention to right now. Choosing this over scrolling counts as a good decision, even a small one. This works better when you don't overthink it.

1 Before you start

  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
  • Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
  • Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
  • Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
  • Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.

3 When it ends

  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.
  • Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.

4What to put on

a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
