Focus session for reading: 90 minutes, plain quiet, when you are on your own
90 minutes of reading, with plain quiet and a note on what to do when you drift.
90:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Part of you is still in the last conversation you had. That's fine. It can sit here too. Being on your own is not required, but it does make this simpler. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.
1 Before you start
- Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
- Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
2 While the timer runs
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
3 When it ends
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
4What to put on
plain quiet — No added sound at all. If you have a quiet room, that is usually better than any recording of one.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
