Deep work timer: 25 minutes of problem solving (a stream), when you are doing this for the first time
One block of problem solving with a stream underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
If your legs are crossed, uncross them. Small changes count. If this is your first go, stay with the plainest version of the instructions. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
2 While the timer runs
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
- If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
3 When it ends
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
4What to put on
a stream — Running water with small variation. Softer than rain and less repetitive than a fan.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
