Deep work timer: 25 minutes of thesis writing (brown noise), when the weather has kept you inside

One block of thesis writing with brown noise underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

If you're sitting, let the chair do the work of holding you upright. Bad weather is a decent excuse to stay in and do this. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.

1 Before you start

  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
  • Decide what you will do if you get stuck: write the problem out, then move on.
  • Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.

2 While the timer runs

  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.

3 When it ends

  • Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
  • Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.

4What to put on

brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
