25-minute drawing session with a fireplace and a timer, when the weather has kept you inside

Sit down, press start, and fill the page for 25 minutes. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

If you're sitting, let the chair do the work of holding you upright. Bad weather is a decent excuse to stay in and do this. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.

1 Before you start

  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
  • If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
  • Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
  • Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
  • Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.

3 When it ends

  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.

4What to put on

a fireplace — Crackles and a low roar underneath. Warm, irregular, and undemanding.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
