Deep work timer: 25 minutes of studying (brown noise), when you are too tired to try hard

One block of studying with brown noise underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Turn your phone face down if it's within reach. If it's in another room, even better. Too tired to try hard is exactly the right amount of tired for this. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.

1 Before you start

  • Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
  • Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
  • Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
  • Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.

2 While the timer runs

  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
  • If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.

3 When it ends

  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.

4What to put on

brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.
