A 45-minute block for portfolio work, with white noise, on a day that started badly
A single 45-minute block for portfolio work — the last ten percent.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Drop your attention from your head into your chest for a second. A day that started badly does not have to stay that way. This works better when you don't overthink it.
1 Before you start
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
- Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
2 While the timer runs
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
3 When it ends
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
4What to put on
white noise — Flat across all frequencies and very effective at covering speech. Some people find it harsh after an hour; keep the volume low.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try 25-minute focus session for admin and email with rain on a window, after eating too much, 90-minute focus block for planning — forest at dusk, when you need something unremarkable or 50-minute focus session for coding with plain quiet, when you need to stop thinking about work.
