45-minute portfolio work session with rain on a window and a timer, when you are on your own

Sit down, press start, and finish the pieces for 45 minutes. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.

Find one place in your body that already feels fine. Use that as the starting point. Being on your own is not required, but it does make this simpler. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.

1 Before you start

  • Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
  • Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
  • Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
  • Decide what you will do if you get stuck: write the problem out, then move on.
  • Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.

2 While the timer runs

  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
  • If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.

3 When it ends

  • Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
  • If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
  • Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.

4What to put on

rain on a window — Steady rain is broadband noise with a slow natural rhythm. It masks speech and keyboard clatter without being interesting enough to listen to.
