A 45-minute block for language practice, with a washing machine, after a long day

A single 45-minute block for language practice — repetition rather than novelty.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Let your next exhale be a sigh, if a sigh is what's waiting there. Use it at the end of a long day, not at the start of one. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.

1 Before you start

  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
  • Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
  • Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
  • Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
  • Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.

3 When it ends

  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
  • Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.

4What to put on

a washing machine — Domestic, mechanical, and oddly steadying. The sound of something else being dealt with.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
