Deep work timer: 45 minutes of planning (vinyl crackle), when you are not in the mood
One block of planning with vinyl crackle underneath. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
45:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Quick check: is anything genuinely urgent in this exact minute? Usually the answer is no. Not being in the mood is a normal starting point. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.
1 Before you start
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
- Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
- If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
2 While the timer runs
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
3 When it ends
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
4What to put on
vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
