Deep work timer: 50 minutes of exam revision (a stream), when you need to stop thinking about work
One block of exam revision with a stream underneath. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Sit however you were already sitting. You don't have to straighten up first. Work thoughts are allowed to be there. They just do not get to drive. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
2 While the timer runs
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
3 When it ends
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
4What to put on
a stream — Running water with small variation. Softer than rain and less repetitive than a fan.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
