50-minute focus session for coding with distant thunder, when you have woken up too early
50 minutes on coding — one function at a time, not the whole system. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. Waking too early is a specific kind of frustrating. This helps with the frustration. This works better when you don't overthink it.
1 Before you start
- Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
2 While the timer runs
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
3 When it ends
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
4What to put on
distant thunder — Low rumbles with long gaps. Suits people who find sudden noises more distracting than constant ones.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
