Focus session · applications and forms · 50 min
50-minute focus block for applications and forms — a library, when you are waiting for something
A timer, a short prep list, and 50 minutes to get through the questions.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let your shoulders drop about a centimetre. That is roughly where most of us keep the day. Waiting is dead time you can spend on this instead. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Decide what you will do if you get stuck: write the problem out, then move on.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
2 While the timer runs
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
3 When it ends
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
4What to put on
a library — Almost nothing: distant footsteps, a chair, a page turning. Useful if you want the feeling of a room where work is normal.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
