45-minute focus session for drawing with forest at dusk, before something difficult
45 minutes on drawing — without correcting anything yet. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Take one breath that is slightly slower than the last one. That is enough to start. It works best in the hour before something difficult. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
3 When it ends
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
4What to put on
forest at dusk — Birds settling, leaves moving, nothing sudden. It works because it sounds like a place you can safely ignore.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try Deep work timer: 90 minutes of drawing (a fan or air conditioner), when you are at home and cannot settle, 25-minute reading session with a fireplace and a timer, before something difficult or 45-minute focus session for admin and email with brown noise, when you have more time than usual.
