45-minute focus block for admin and email — white noise, when you are short on time
A timer, a short prep list, and 45 minutes to clear the queue.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
If your legs are crossed, uncross them. Small changes count. Pick this one when you are short on time. No preamble. We start with the body.
1 Before you start
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
- Plan to leave the last two minutes for writing down where to pick up next time.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
2 While the timer runs
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
3 When it ends
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
4What to put on
white noise — Flat across all frequencies and very effective at covering speech. Some people find it harsh after an hour; keep the volume low.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try Focus session for planning: 25 minutes, a fireplace, when you have just finished work, 45-minute reading session with a stream and a timer, when you are not in the mood or Deep work timer: 50 minutes of planning (distant thunder), when you are too tired to try hard.
