45-minute editing session with brown noise and a timer, when you want something simple
Sit down, press start, and cut and tighten for 45 minutes. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Part of you is still in the last conversation you had. That's fine. It can sit here too. Simple is the point. There is no advanced version to graduate to. Straight through, at a normal pace.
1 Before you start
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
2 While the timer runs
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
3 When it ends
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
4What to put on
brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try Deep work timer: 50 minutes of problem solving (a library), when you have been on screens all day, 25-minute focus block for planning — a stream, if you are new to this or Focus session for planning: 25 minutes, a fireplace, when you have just finished work.
