25-minute focus session for problem solving with café murmur, when you want something simple
25 minutes on problem solving — before looking anything up. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Keep your eyes open if you like, resting on one point of the floor a metre or two ahead. Simple is the point. There is no advanced version to graduate to. No preamble. We start with the body.
1 Before you start
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
- Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
3 When it ends
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
4What to put on
café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
