A 50-minute block for design work, with plain quiet, after eating too much

A single 50-minute block for design work — rough versions first.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Let the floor take your weight through your feet, and stop holding yourself up for a second. Do this sitting up, not lying down, if you have just eaten. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.

1 Before you start

  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
  • Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
  • Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
  • Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.

2 While the timer runs

  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
  • When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
  • If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
  • If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.

3 When it ends

  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.

4What to put on

plain quiet — No added sound at all. If you have a quiet room, that is usually better than any recording of one.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
