25-minute design work session with a washing machine and a timer, when you are too tired to try hard

Sit down, press start, and make decisions for 25 minutes. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Sit however you were already sitting. You don't have to straighten up first. Too tired to try hard is exactly the right amount of tired for this. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.

1 Before you start

  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
  • Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
  • Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
  • Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.

2 While the timer runs

  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
  • When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.

3 When it ends

  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.

4What to put on

a washing machine — Domestic, mechanical, and oddly steadying. The sound of something else being dealt with.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
