Breathing exercise · 2 · 6
Physiological sigh — 2 · 6 — for heavy days, when you need something unremarkable
Rounds of 2 · 6, with the counting done for you.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Breathe in through your nose. Before you let it out, take a second short sip of air on top. Then release everything slowly through your mouth. Nothing dramatic happens here, and that is deliberate. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.
Why it can help
Two inhales and one long out-breath. That is the entire technique.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 2s | 0s |
| Exhale | 6s | 2s |
One round is 8 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 64 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- at the kitchen table, with a cup of tea going cold
- before you walk into a room full of people
- when you have read the same paragraph three times
Tips
- Do it with your shoulders still. The movement should be in your ribs and belly.
- Two minutes done properly beats ten minutes done while checking your phone.
- No holds means no buildup. The rhythm does all the work.
Please note
The double inhale is gentle, but if you feel lightheaded, reduce it to a single inhale and a long exhale. Stop if you feel dizzy. If you have a heart or lung condition, check with a doctor before starting a new breathing practice.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try How to use Uneven box breathing for a night shift, when you only have a few minutes, Box breathing exercise for Monday morning — before something difficult or 4-7-8 breathing for days when everything is too much, if you have done this a hundred times.
