Breathing exercise · 2 · 1 · 4

2-1-4 breathing — 2 · 1 · 4 — for Sunday evening, when you need something unremarkable

The pattern is 2 · 1 · 4, which is short in, short hold, long out — the smallest useful dose.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

In for 2, hold for 1, out for 4. The exhale is longer than the inhale — that is the entire instruction. Nothing dramatic happens here, and that is deliberate. Stay with what you can actually feel.

Why it can help

The ratio matters more than the depth. Shallow but long beats deep and rushed.

One round is 7 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 42 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when your hands are cold and your chest is tight
  • when your thoughts are moving faster than you are
  • while you are waiting for something to start

Tips

  • Stop after a few rounds if you feel dizzy, and breathe normally for a minute.
  • There is no need to breathe deeply. Long and quiet is the aim.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
